Climate Resilient Woodlands
Creating Future-Proof Forests in Ireland, Rooted in Nature
At Druath, we specialise in designing and managing climate-resilient woodlands across Ireland—forests that can thrive in a changing climate while delivering long-term environmental, social, and economic value. Using Close to Nature principles, we create woodlands that adapt, endure, and regenerate, ensuring they remain strong for generations to come.
🌿 What Is a Climate-Resilient Woodland?
A climate-resilient woodland is one that can:
Withstand extreme weather events like storms, droughts, and heavy rainfall
Adapt to gradual temperature shifts and changes in seasonal patterns
Resist pests and diseases through natural diversity
Continue to store carbon, support wildlife, and produce high-quality timber over time
How Druath Builds In Climate Resilience
We follow a nature-based, continuous cover forestry (CCF) approach. This means we work with natural systems, not against them.
1. 🌱 Native & Site-Adapted Species
We plant and promote natural regeneration of native and climate-adapted species like oak, birch, Scots pine, alder, and holly. These trees are better suited to local soils and future climate scenarios, offering resilience and biodiversity benefits.
2. 🌲 Structural Diversity
Instead of single-age, uniform plantations, we create mixed-age, multi-layered forests. This structure buffers the woodland against climate shocks and promotes natural cycles of regeneration and carbon storage.
3. 🌧️ Soil & Water Protection
Healthy soils mean healthy forests. We use low-impact harvesting, protect forest floor vegetation, and maintain natural water flow patterns to reduce erosion and improve water retention—essential during droughts or floods.
4. 🐞 Biodiversity as a Defence
We treat biodiversity as a form of insurance. By encouraging understory plants, fungi, insects, and birds, we create ecosystems that self-regulate, suppress pests naturally, and respond flexibly to change.
5. 🌲 Continuous Canopy & Natural Regeneration
Our woodlands never get clear-felled. Instead, we apply selective harvesting and support natural regeneration from seed, reducing carbon loss and preserving forest microclimates critical for resilience.
🌱 Druaths Long-Term Impact
By designing woodlands to grow slowly, sustainably, and intelligently
We Build forests that are less vulnerable to disease and fire
We Store carbon more reliably
We Provide continuous shelter, beauty, and biodiversity
We Contribute to Ireland’s climate adaptation and rewilding goals
